Supermarket Gets New Epoxy-Finished Floor

Providence, RI

Worn-Out, Discolored Food Prep Area Floor

When a large, multi-state supermarket chain needed a new epoxy floor installed in one of their south coast New England stores, they called on PAL Painting to tackle the job. Epoxy floor coating systems, which are widely used in the food service industry, provide surface protection, are easy to clean, and are resistant to many chemicals. After many years of foot traffic and frequent wash-downs, the floor in the store's food preparation area was worn-out, discolored, and needed to be redone.

The first phase of the project began with grinding and shot-blasting the concrete floor, making keyed edges where needed, and applying cove strips. The cove base was then primed with a mixture of Dur-A-Glaze #4 Water Clear Hardener and Dur-A-Glaze #4 Cove-Rez resin. The cove mix mortar (#4 Water Clear Hardener, #4 Cove-Rez, and Dur-A-Quartz Q28-33) was then applied by trowel. Using a flat squeegee and back-roll, PAL then primed the area with Dur-A-Glaze WB Hardener and #4 Cove-Rez, and allowed this to cure overnight.

The Challenge of Working in a Retail Environment

Because the job was being done in a retail environment with public access, PAL faced the challenge of conducting all the prep work and finish work while minimizing impact on the supermarket's customers and its daily business activities. For the second phase of the job, they applied a mixture of Dur-A-Glaze #4 Fast Hardener and #4 Cove-Rez with a V-notch squeegee and back-roll with a nap roller cover. Then they broadcasted Q28-33 at one half pound per square foot and allowed this to cure for 3-4 hours. For the next step, they applied the same mixture of #4 fast hardener and #4 Cove-Rez by squeegee and back-roll, and cross roll, and again broadcasted Q28-33 to excess at one half pound per square foot.

To complete the job, PAL sealed the cove base with a mixture of #4 Water Clear Hardener and #4 Cove-Rez, and then applied a mixture of Novolac hardener and Novolac resin using a squeegee and backroll, and cross roll with nap roller cover.

A Seamless Process for Employees and Customers

To achieve a minimal impact on employees and customers, PAL worked at night when the store was closed to ensure the process was seamless for those who were both working and shopping in the store. To return the food prep area to service as soon as possible, PAL expedited the process and finished the job within schedule. When the job was complete, the PAL team was pleased to learn that the client did not receive any customer complaints about their presence in the store.

If your company needs a timely, professionally supervised resinous floor coating installation that needs to be completed quickly to return your business to service as soon as possible, PAL Painting has you covered.
